University of San Francisco is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Consisting of 180 units of study, with 29 units in the Concentration, the Cal Poly GrC BS requires 60 units of upper-division courses and support courses such as Statistical Concepts and Methods, Physics, and World of Chemistry. Course examples for the major include Consumer Packaging, Digital Printing and Emerging Technologies in Graphic Communication, Applied Graphic Communication Practices, Digital Photography and Motion Graphics, Contemporary Print Management and Manufacturing, and Digital Typography. BS students will complete Senior Project (students’ selection, individual), Senior Project – Independent Study (collaborative) OR Senior Project – Applied Practices (individual or group). Serving approximately 36,000 students, the school offers more than 250 areas of study at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. A senior project also allows students to focus on individual interests within the areas of Visual Communication and Image, Interactivity and Games, or Video and Animation. We attract creatives from across the globe who are interested in pursuing diverse art and design disciplines. And our alumni go on to create works you already know and love—everything from your favorite show on Netflix to the car you drive. Our faculty of more than 450 practicing artists and designers help students build the skills they need to strengthen their creative voice. As one of two areas of emphasis offered in the Communication Arts program, Graphic Design challenges students to research, develop, and refine projects that combine image-making and typographic form in order to communicate visually in meaningful ways across a wide variety of media.

Creative Business Majors
Worth six credits, the culminating requirement for the program consists of Professional Practices for Design and the Senior Design Project. Graduates of the Cal State Fullerton Department of Visual Arts go on to enroll in graduate or doctoral programs at institutions such as Rutgers University, New York University (NYU), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Parsons School of Design, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). All UCLA DMA and Media Arts students have access to numerous labs, spaces, and other facilities. During the final year of the Graphic Design BFA Program, students will complete the Senior Thesis/Research Paper course, Senior Project/Seminar, and a Capstone Project.

Program Faculty
Design BA students will complete a Design Internship, Professional Practice in Design, and the Senior Design Project. In addition to the Design Internship, BA students can obtain experience through the Exhibition Design Practicum, which encompasses the curation, design, organizing, and launch of an exhibition in the University of San Francisco Thacher Gallery. Course examples include Digital Publishing Systems, User Experience for Digital Innovation, Digital and Offset Printing Methods, Graphic Communication in Integrated Marketing Communications, and Digital Typography. The College of Arts and Letters at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) houses the Department of Art, which has Art BA, MA, and MFA degrees with a Graphic Design/Visual Communication Option. As part of the Cal State LA Department of Art, all degree-seeking students have the opportunity to present their work through weekly rotating exhibitions in the student-run exhibition space COMA Gallery.
Undergraduate Admission
Menswear is often overlooked in fashion education, but understanding how to style clothing for the male form is a necessary skill for any fashion designer seeking well-rounded training. Students in this class will learn how to layer men’s clothing, choose fabrics and materials when creating a look, and style outfits for a broad range of purposes, including editorial photoshoots, runway shows, and everyday wear. If you want the expertise, experience, and confidence to coordinate outfits for men, provide image consulting, and put together flattering, trendsetting ensembles, you can’t miss this course.
Course examples across programs include Artists and Designers in Real Time, Graphic Design I-IV, Packaging Design, Experiential Graphic Design, Expressive Typography, Screen Printing Studio, Design for the Internet, Art and Design Theory and Criticism, and Seminar in Professional Practice of Art and Design. The School of Art at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) has a Graphic Design Program with BFA and MFA options. Program features for both pathways include small, critique-based classes, communal studios with 24 hour access, mentoring, and access to School of Art facilities and labs. Courses for the programs are taught by industry professionals with years of experience.
The Graphic Design MFA at Otis College of Art and Design features an accelerated curriculum spanning four consecutive semesters completed over 14 months. The program, which typically begins in the summer semester, consists of studio projects, workshops led by visiting artists and designers, round table discussions, and courses in history and design theory. Course examples for the program include Contemporary Graphic Design Issues, Models of Practice, Seminar Studio I-IV, and Entrepreneurship. The Herron School of Art + Design at Indiana University-Purdue University offers BFA and MFA degrees in Visual Communications Design (VCD). BFA program highlights include access to collaborative classrooms and eight VCD studios, the opportunity to enhance the degree with a Minor in Book Arts or Studio Art and Technology, and classes taught by faculty who are working professionals in the field.
There are several computer software programs that allow users to conveniently design, adapt, and perfect sewing patterns for their fashion creations. The best fashion design schools introduce students to these programs and ensure they are comfortable utilizing them before graduation. Our computerized pattern-making course guides students through drafting new styles, making pattern modifications, and converting digital pattern files so they can be easily transferred to other programs. 3D printing, virtual reality fittings, AI-assisted fashion design, and product lifecycle management platforms are just a few technological advancements that are revolutionizing the fashion industry. If new and emerging fashion designers want to thrive in a continuously evolving landscape, they must be familiar with the latest industry tools, software programs, and innovations. This course introduces several high-tech fashion solutions and allows students to experiment with them firsthand.
University of Southern California is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The USC Roski Communication Design Minor consists of 24 units and includes coursework in digital imaging, business, communication, visual literacy, marketing, and public relations. Courses for the UCLA DMA and Media Arts Programs are taught as studios, typically with no more than 22 students. Course examples for the undergraduate program include Design Culture, Topics in Visual Communication and Image, Typography, Network Media, Narrative, Word + Image, Special Topics in Design Media Arts, Form, Topics in Interactivity And Games, and Tangible Media. DMA BFA students will complete course 159, Capstone Senior Project in Design Media Arts, to graduate.
Students also get hands-on in skills-based workshops in 2D and 3D design-specific media. There’s also critical theory seminars, internships, international design study tours and a senior thesis. USC also aims to create well rounded designers, so all students on the Design BFA have to complete modles in a complementary field such as business, marketing or advertising. Though the course at USC isn’t as graphic design focused as others, its cohesiveness makes USC one of the best graphic design colleges in Los Angeles. Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University offers a BFA in Graphic & Interactive Design (GAID), a BFA in Graphic & Interactive Design with Entrepreneurial Studies, and an MFA in Graphic & Interactive Design.
Our programs are built on a foundation of cutting-edge curriculum, expert faculty, and industry integration. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design offers a rigorous curriculum involving research and development, critical thinking and fearless image making as it applies to work in the 2-D, 3-D, 4-D fields. Students create projects in a wide variety of media with various audiences including social media, coding, product development, interface, augmented reality, environmental graphics, print-based work and more. Applications for admission to the graduate programs are evaluated by the USC Office of Graduate Admission before being forwarded to the school. Students must be admitted by both the USC Graduate School and the Roski School of Art and Design.
The two-year option is designed for students with experience in one or more areas of design. The three-year option is for students with an undergraduate degree in an unrelated area. The first year of this program allows students to develop design skills in preparation for the traditional two-year curriculum.
And by studying in Los Angeles, students can enhance their education with access to numerous museums as well as an extensive number of galleries, design firms, artist studios and music and film industries, providing a wealth of internship and employment opportunities for a successful future. Programs for Graphic Designers include the Art/Studio Art BA and MFA, and the Graphic Design BFA and Minor. The 120 credit hour BFA program helps students develop skills in typography, print and editorial design, information design, digital imaging and motion graphics, packaging, environmental design, identity design, and branding.
